Special Interest Tours

coffeelg.jpg (35862 bytes) Coffee, Birds, and Plants of Guatemala
Guatemala packs more biodiversity in a land the size of Ohio than any country three times its size in the Americas. Come experience the range of its natural beauty through a series of guided excursions that carry you from the tropical lush lowlands of the Rio Dulce to the semitropical and temperate cloud forests of the Altiplano in Guatemala's Central Highlands. This tour includes visits to the Mario Dary Biotope where macaus, toucans, and the elusive Quetzal live in a rainforest also home to more than 50 varieties of orchids and bromeliads and to Lake Atitlan, judged by Aldous Huxley to be "the most beautiful lake in the world." At the lake, you visit the San Buenaventura Nature Reserve, which preserves and displays the lake basin's unique ecology, and are guided through a family-run coffee plantation, where gourmet-quality coffee (arabica) is organically grown, processed and packaged. You will also hike the skirts of the lake's volcanoes to see changes in flora and fauna from lakeshore to higher elevations. This tour includes side trips to the Spanish colonial city of Antigua and to the indigenous cultural and artisan market center of Chichicastenango. It also offers a supplemental overnight package to Tikal in the Peten Rainforest where nearly 250 bird species share space with a wide range of exotic jungle plants and animals amidst the most impressive ruins of the ancient Mayan world.
Next Tour - To Be Determined
Basic Coffee - 12 days.
Coffee with Tikal - 14 days.
Participation requires good health and physical fitness as some activities call for hiking at elevations up to 6,500 feet.   While "roughing it" is not an intentional goal of this tour, the itinerary sometimes makes it unavoidable.  Package price is necessarily based on double occupancy with shared bath as single occupancy and private baths are not available at some overnight locations.  The tour leader will coordinate upgrades where available upon request at some additional charge. Package price includes all breakfasts and about half of other meals.
